Kolkata (formerly: Calcutta) is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. The city was founded as a trading post of the British East India Company and was the capital of British India from 1773 to 1911. Today it is known for its grand colonial architecture, art galleries and cultural festivals. It is also home to the Mother House, headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity. This order was founded by Mother Teresa, who is also buried in Kolkata.
