Big Sur is a coastal strip in the U.S. state of California between San Simeon to the south and Carmel-by-the-Sea to the north. It encompasses about 100 kilometres (62 mi) of California coastline and the towering Santa Lucia Range mountains behind it. Since it is not an official administrative unit, the boundaries are not used consistently.
