Monterey is located in the center of California on the rugged coast. Cannery Row, once the center of the sardine packing industry, was immortalized by writer John Steinbeck. Today, converted factories here house souvenir stores, seafood restaurants and bars. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is also well known, with thousands of marine animals and plants in aquariums and interactive exhibits.
